Description
Connecting adopters with shelters and stray dogs through a seamless and transparent adoption process.
Context
An app designed to simplify and support dog adoption in Turkey by bridging the gap between adopters, shelters, and stray dogs. BARK offers a range of features, including verified shelter listings, adoption matching, educational resources, responsible pet ownership guidance, and a community-driven platform for collaboration.
Problem
The issue of stray dogs in Turkey has become increasingly pressing, with recent legislation mandating municipalities to shelter, vaccinate, and sterilize stray dogs. However, the law’s provision for euthanizing aggressive or ill dogs has sparked public concern, with activists advocating for humane solutions like adoption over culling. Despite a strong cultural affinity for animals, Turkey’s adoption rates remain low, which, combined with an estimated 4 million stray dogs, places immense strain on shelters that are often overcrowded and under-resourced.
Challange
How can I transform the dog adoption process in Turkey by making it more accessible, transparent, and supportive for both adopters and rescue organizations?
Goals
1. Simplify and streamline the adoption process through an intuitive platform
2. Foster responsible adoption by providing comprehensive resources and support
3. Build a community that supports transparency and collaboration
RESEARCH
Understanding the problem
I conducted user surveys and interviews and transformed the insights into detailed user personas and empathy maps. This process provided a deeper understanding of users, their needs, and their pain points.
Conclusion
The research and surveys conducted for BARK reveal a multifaceted landscape of dog adoption challenges and opportunities in Turkey. While there is a strong desire among individuals to adopt dogs, several barriers hinder this process, including the complexity of adoption procedures, a lack of reliable communication with shelters, and limited access to information about available dogs. Factors like concerns about shelter dogs' behavior, health transparency, and compatibility with adopters' lifestyles also play a significant role in decision-making.
The research also emphasizes a critical need for post-adoption support, including resources for training, health care, and integration, to ensure successful transitions for both adopters and dogs.
By addressing these pain points through streamlined processes, enhanced transparency, and robust post-adoption services, BARK can significantly improve the adoption experience. Furthermore, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among adopters and shelters can build trust and encourage more responsible and successful adoptions.
Emphaty Map
Personas
Based on the survey results, I decided to focus on two key personas: The First-Time Pet Owner and The Family-Oriented Adopter. First-time pet owners represent a large potential user base but face barriers like inexperience and hesitation, requiring guidance, education, and support. Family-oriented adopters prioritize safety and compatibility, making features like child-friendly filters, success stories, and tailored support essential for their needs.
